Currency exchange API for business platforms: what it costs and how it works

currency exchange image

A currency exchange API lets your platform convert money between currencies inside your own product, so your customers never leave to change funds elsewhere. It works by connecting to a regulated provider that quotes rates, executes conversions and settles the funds. With Verto Atlas, conversion runs 24/7 through the API. Here are the problems platforms hit with FX, why they happen, and how to fix them.

The symptoms platforms notice first

Platforms that add FX usually spot the same problems within a few months of launch.

Customers try to convert on a Saturday and nothing happens until Monday. Others dispute the rate they got, because the number they saw is not the number that settled. Margins on exotic corridors shrink with no obvious reason. And finance teams spend days matching conversions to payouts by hand.

None of these is a coding bug. Each has a cause in how the FX behind the API is sourced and shown.

Why conversions stall outside banking hours

Many FX set-ups depend on banks and markets that keep office hours. If your provider sources currency only when a market is open, your customers' conversions queue until it reopens.

For platforms serving emerging markets, this matters more. Your customers often earn in one currency and pay in another on the same day, including at weekends. Verto Atlas supports 24/7 FX execution through the API, so a conversion requested on Saturday is executed on Saturday.

Why customers dispute rates

Rate disputes usually come from a gap between what the customer saw and what they received. That gap opens when a rate is shown, time passes, and the conversion executes at a different price.

The fix sits in your product as much as in the API. Show the customer the rate, any fee and the amount the recipient will get before they confirm, and decide how long a quote stays valid in your interface. The FCA also sets out what customers should check when using a payment service provider, which is a useful guide to the information people expect to see.

Where the cost of an FX API hides

Platforms often compare FX providers on one headline rate. The real cost has more parts:

  • The spread. The gap between the rate you get and the mid-market rate. On exotic currencies it can vary widely between providers.

  • Fees. Any per-conversion or per-payout charge on top of the spread.

  • Liquidity in your corridors. A provider with thin liquidity in naira or shillings may quote wider or fill more slowly when volumes rise.

  • Failed and returned payments. Each one costs support time and sometimes a second conversion.

  • Reconciliation. Hours spent matching conversions to payouts by hand are a cost, even if they never appear on an invoice.

Ask every provider about all five, not just the first. Atlas pricing is agreed with Verto's team for your volumes and corridors.

Why emerging-market corridors need a different provider

Cross-border payments into Sub-Saharan Africa remain the most expensive of any region for retail payments, according to the Financial Stability Board's October 2025 progress report. Part of that cost is FX: sourcing local currency reliably and at scale.

Verto provides FX liquidity to many fintechs, banks and payment service providers across Africa. That depth is what lets a platform offer conversions into and out of currencies such as NGN, KES and XOF without its customers waiting for liquidity to appear.

How to fix it with Verto Atlas

Atlas brings FX and the money around it into one integration:

  1. Collect into sub-accounts. Each customer gets local account details in currencies including NGN, KES, TZS, XOF, XAF, AED, USD, GBP and EUR.

  2. Hold before converting. Customers can keep balances in wallets and convert when they choose, which cuts disputes about timing.

  3. Convert 24/7 through the API. Conversions run at any hour, every day.

  4. Pay out. Send funds to 100+ countries in 48 currencies, including USD, EUR and CNH, or make instant mass payouts across Africa by local bank transfer or mobile money.

  5. Track with webhooks. Your system is notified at each step, so balances and ledgers update without manual checks.

If your team lacks developers, the same services run directly on the Verto platform. If you only need FX for your own company's payments rather than your customers', Verto's Core API is the better fit.

What a good FX experience looks like for your customers

From your customer's side, good FX is almost invisible. They see a clear rate and the exact amount the recipient will get, they confirm, and the conversion happens at any hour without a queue.

They can also choose when to convert. A business that earns in dollars and pays in naira may want to hold dollars for a few days and convert when it needs to. Letting customers hold balances in wallets, and convert on their own timing, gives them that control inside your product rather than pushing them to another provider.

Finally, they can see every conversion in their history, with the rate and amount recorded. That record answers most questions before they reach your support team.

How to stop the problems coming back

Once FX is live, a few habits keep it healthy. Reconcile your own ledger against what your provider reports every day, not every month. Review spreads by corridor each quarter as volumes change. Keep a record of every quote shown to a customer, so any dispute can be checked in minutes.

Atlas comes with 24/7 customer support and a dedicated account manager who knows your set-up. For how FX fits into the wider integration, read what embedded finance is and how to add FX and payments to your platform.

Every conversion that stalls or settles at the wrong rate costs your customers money and you their trust. Let them convert when they choose, at any hour. Get started or speak to our team about Verto Atlas. You can also see how balances work in Verto's Multi-currency Wallets.
