Your app is live in the UAE, your first customers in Lagos and Nairobi are asking for local accounts, and every payment to them still goes through a patchwork of providers. A UAE fintech serving African customers can add accounts, FX and payouts to its own product through Verto Atlas, one integration that runs on Verto's licences and infrastructure. Here is what you can embed, how it fits together and what to check before you start.
What does a UAE fintech need to serve African customers?
Customers who trade with Africa usually need four things: a place to collect money, a way to convert it, a way to send it on and a way to see what happened. Without a partner, that means several vendors, several contracts and several days.
Atlas covers all four through one integration: virtual accounts to collect, 24/7 FX to convert, payouts to send and webhooks to track every step. You build the experience; Verto runs the accounts and payments behind it.
An illustrative scenario: a Dubai app paying contractors in Africa
This is a made-up example, not a real customer. Imagine a Dubai-based app that lets companies pay freelancers and contractors across Africa. Its customers fund payments in AED or USD. Its contractors expect naira or Kenyan shillings in their bank accounts or mobile money wallets.
Today the app juggles a provider per country. With Atlas, it can give each customer a sub-account, collect in AED or USD, convert through the API at any hour, and pay out in batches to bank accounts and mobile money wallets, tracking each payment with webhooks.
What can you embed with Atlas?
Building block | What it does | Atlas feature |
|---|---|---|
Collections | Your customers receive money locally | Virtual accounts in AED, USD, GBP, EUR and African currencies |
FX | Your customers convert currencies | 24/7 conversion through the API |
Payouts | Your customers pay many recipients at once | Mass payouts to bank accounts and mobile money wallets |
Global payments | Your customers pay suppliers abroad | 100+ countries, 48 currencies, including USD, EUR and CNH |
Tracking | Your system knows each payment's status | Webhook notifications |
Atlas virtual accounts support local currencies including AED, NGN, KES, TZS, XOF, XAF, ZAR, DKK, UGX, USD, GBP and EUR. Availability depends on your business and use case.
Which version of Atlas fits a UAE fintech?
Atlas comes in two versions. Atlas for Fintechs suits financial companies such as payment service providers and banks that want to embed collections, FX and payouts in their own products. Atlas for Platforms suits marketplaces, software companies, expense management platforms and brokers that want to add payments and virtual accounts to a product that wasn't built as a financial one.
Which applies depends on what your company does and how you are regulated. Verto's team will help you decide when you speak to sales.
How do African payouts work?
Last-mile payouts run as instant mass payouts, straight to bank accounts or mobile money wallets. In many African markets a recipient's main account is a mobile wallet, and the GSMA's State of the Industry Report on Mobile Money tracks how central these wallets have become.
Paying in local currency means recipients don't need to convert dollars at their own bank's rate on arrival. Your app also avoids building and maintaining a separate connection for every country.
Do you need developers?
Not necessarily. Atlas can be run through the API for full control, or directly on the Verto platform if you don't have developers free. Teams often run their first batches on the platform while engineering builds the API flow. Developer documentation is at docs.vertofx.com.
Who holds the money and the licences?
Atlas runs on Verto's licences and infrastructure. Verto is authorised by the UK Financial Conduct Authority as an Electronic Money Institution, and customer funds are held in safeguarded accounts, separate from Verto's own money. The FCA explains how safeguarding works for e-money institutions. [VERIFY] Confirm whether to mention UAE-specific regulatory treatment.
Take your own legal advice on how your product and customer terms fit the rules where you operate.
What does this look like in practice?
Triply, an African travel platform, used the Atlas API to run its payment operation in one integration: issuing virtual accounts, converting currency in real time and paying out funds. A process that took several days and several vendors became one automated flow.
